Information for Tenants and Landlords

Foster carers provide safe, stable homes for children who cannot live with their birth families.

Renting is not a barrier to fostering, but we understand that tenants and landlords may have specific concerns about how fostering fits into a tenancy agreement. Whether you’re a tenant considering fostering or a landlord whose tenant is exploring this option, we’re here to answer your questions and help make the process clear and supportive.

This page provides practical guidance for both tenants and landlords, covering topics such as permissions, property requirements, insurance, and support. Together, we can help create the stable environments children in care need to thrive.

Can I foster if I rent?

Renting is not a barrier to fostering, but you do need the consent of your landlord.  Whatever type of accommodation you live in, you will need to have room for a child, including their own bedroom for them to sleep in (although children under age 3 can share a bedroom with their carer if there is space for a cot / cot bed).  On some occasions siblings can share rooms, but not usually when they are over 10, and it is important that children in care have their own space, where they can play, relax, study and adjust to their new life.

The most important thing for children is that they have a stable and supportive environment because that is key to their wellbeing.  Children in care need consistency and it is important that you are not planning to move around a lot, as we try to avoid multiple school changes or long journeys for childIt’s also important that you don’t have rent arrears or are at risk of eviction When you start a fostering assessment, your home and living environment will be checked to make sure they are safe and suitable

Fostering is a rewarding way to make a difference in your community. Foster carers receive expert training, financial support, and professional guidance, and they play a vital role in helping local children thrive.

Tenants who foster are often reliable, community-minded, and committed to staying long-term to provide stability for the child in their care. By supporting fostering in your property, you’re helping build a stronger, more compassionate borough.

Supporting a tenant who wants to become foster carers is easier than you might think.
