- Provide stability and reassurance. You may be the first safe adult relationship they’ve had in a long time.
- Respect their culture and identity. Support them to practise their faith, eat familiar foods and keep links to their heritage.
- Help with practical needs. This might include school enrolment, English lessons, healthcare and understanding UK life.
- Support their asylum process. They’ll have solicitors and social workers, but your encouragement matters.
- Be patient and empathetic. Trauma can affect behaviour and trust. Take things at their pace.
Fostering Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children
Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) are young people under 18 years old who have come to the UK without a parent or guardian, often fleeing war, persecution or danger. They may have experienced trauma, loss and a difficult journey to safety. Most are teenagers, and many speak little or no English.
What do they need?
Just like any child, they need a safe, caring home, food, and emotional support. But they also need help adjusting to life in the UK, learning English and coping with trauma. They may feel anxious, mistrustful or struggle to sleep because of past experiences.
