Family time
Why family time matters
Family time helps children stay connected to the people they love, feel cared for, and know who they are. It can include visits, phone calls, video chats, or letters. These moments remind children they are loved and never alone.
Your role as a foster carer
You’re not expected to manage family time on your own. You’ll have guidance and backup from your supervising social worker and the wider team. They’ll provide clear plans, practical advice and emotional support whenever needed.
Here’s how you’ll be supported:
- Clear ‘contact plans’ set by social workers (sometimes guided by court decisions) so you know what’s expected.
- Advice and reassurance if a child is anxious, refuses to go, or feels upset after a visit.
- Regular communication so you can share feedback and get quick responses to concerns.
- Help with logistics such as transport arrangements or venue details.
- Extra support if family time becomes difficult. This could include strategies to help manage, therapeutic input or changes to the plan.
