Supporting children’s education

Education is a vital part of every child’s life, and for children in care, it can be a lifeline. Many children enter foster care having faced disruption, missed school, or experienced trauma. This can make learning harder, but with the right support, they can thrive – and foster carers play a key role in that journey.

Why Education Matters

School offers more than lessons. It provides stability, friendships and a sense of belonging. For children who’ve had a difficult start, these things are essential. As a foster carer, you’ll help create the conditions for success – at home and in partnership with schools.

Your role as a foster carer

You don’t need to be a teacher, but you do need to be an advocate. That means:

  • Keeping school routines steady. Make sure the child attends regularly and on time.
  • Helping with homework. Offer encouragement and a quiet space to study.
  • Celebrating achievements. Whether it’s a good grade or a school play, show you’re proud.
  • Communicating with school. Attend parent evenings, share updates and work with teachers to meet the child’s needs.

Support Available

You’re not alone. Every child in care has a Personal Education Plan (PEP), which sets out their learning goals and support needs. You’ll work with the child’s social worker, supervising social worker, and the school’s Designated Teacher for Looked-After Children to make sure the plan is followed.

If the child needs extra help – such as tutoring, speech therapy, or support for special educational needs – these services can be arranged. Virtual Schools (specialist teams within your local council) also provide advice and resources to boost progress.

Training for Carers

You’ll receive training on how to support education, including understanding trauma’s impact on learning and how to advocate for the child. There are workshops, online courses, and support groups where you can share experiences and tips.

Working as a Team

Supporting education is a team effort. You’ll work alongside teachers, social workers, and health professionals to make sure the child gets the best chance to succeed. If you’re ever unsure, ask for help – there’s always someone to guide you.
