Fostering with Mockingbird
About Mockingbird
All the local authorities part of Local Community Fostering use the Mockingbird model to support foster carers and children. Not every carer is part of a Mockingbird group, but joining one can give you extra help and a sense of community.
Mockingbird is an award-winning way of fostering that works like an extended family. Foster families are brought together into a close group called a constellation. Each constellation has 6–10 fostering households.
At the centre is a hub home carer, an experienced foster carer who:
- Offers guidance and advice
- Offers short breaks
- Gives emotional support
This approach helps carers, children, and young people build strong, lasting relationships and feel part of a family.
Check out the explainer video below to help you understand how the Mockingbird model works in practice.
Why join Mockingbird?
- You’re never alone. You’ll be part of a supportive network where carers share experiences, give advice, and encourage each other.
- Help when you need it. Planned and emergency short breaks are available, helping prevent stress and breakdowns. This means more stability for children.
- A sense of belonging. Regular social events, training, and activities help carers and children feel connected and less isolated.
- Greater satisfaction. Carers in Mockingbird often feel happier and are more likely to foster for longer.
In short, Mockingbird is changing foster care. It gives carers a strong support network, improves outcomes for children, and helps everyone feel confident and connected. If you’re thinking about fostering, Mockingbird could be the support you’ve been looking for.
